Abel and I weren’t having sex on the couch, let alone kissing, but when the door opened, I jolted. The sound of chaos filled the air of all the Bishops talking at once.

Beck was screaming at Briar, who was limping, while Ris was yelling at Beck for yelling at Briar. Cain was just yelling, trying to get some control of the situation. Briar leaned against the wall, eyes glossed over.

“He needs a doctor!” Beck shouted.

“He refused!” Osiris snapped. “We can’t force him!”

“What is going on?” Abel shouted. But they all at once started screaming again.

My eyes were glued to Briar. He was hurt and needed attention. The one second Cain let go of him to try to separate Beck and Osiris, Briar’s eyes rolled, and he started to go down.

Quickly, I sprung up, wrapping my arms around him. I steadied him, and my touch seemed to bring him back to reality.

He blinked, eyes scanning my face.

“Make it a habit of falling for girls, Briar?” I teased as Cain—Abel’s brother—helped me get him to the couch.

Briar rolled his eyes, tilting his head back and looking up at the ceiling. His gear was fucked up, mainly in ashes, exposing his undershirt, but it wasn’t a shirt. It was his skin, almost dark enough to look like a shirt.

“Do you guys have a first aid kit and some ice packs?” I asked.

Osiris nodded, moving to look for those things.

“Abel, help me get him lying down.”

Briar tried to protest, but Beck and Abel both got him to lie down.

“Can I have your knife?” I asked Cain.

Cain didn’t hesitate before giving me the pocketknife in his Bishop belt.

“Great. Abel, your girlfriend, is going to kill me,” Briar muttered.

“Good,” Abel stated. “What can I do to help?”

“Ice water and painkillers would also be nice,” I said to Abel, but Beck stood to go get it from the kitchen.

Carefully with my blade, I ran it up his shirt and cut off the remaining. His chest had taken most of the fire, leaving only a few blisters forming on his arm.

Osiris finally came back with the stuff I asked for. I opened the kit and found a bottle of burn ointment. My eyes moved back to Briar. The scars of the fire aren’t the only ones on his body. Pink old scars lay on his hips, up his toned abs, and probably more under the charred burn. I focused on the burn—his other scars were none of my business.

I used gloves to dab the ointment lightly. Afterward, I bandaged up his chest and blisters. His brother was finally able to give him water with the painkillers.

“You’re going to need more ointment. Change his dressings whenever it leaks, or you feel like it’s needed. Don’t,” I looked over at Beck and said, “pop anything.”

“Yes, sir,” Beck nodded.

I placed the ice packs on Briar’s chest, making him hiss at the cold.

“Best to keep him cold: cold showers, ice packs. But it should start healing, and he should be okay.”

“I have a rune for healing,” Cain said, switching places with me.
